Dear Parents and Students, 9/4/2013
I would like to welcome you back to school and to Honors Physical Science. Honors Physical Science is designed for students who exhibit high levels of commitment, motivation and academic maturity. This course presents a rigorous treatment and understanding of the following concepts: the physical and chemical properties of matter, modern atomic theory, organization and application of the periodic table, chemical bonds and reactions. Students are expected to be motivated and spend extra time studying outside of class. Honors Physical Science class content, assignments, as well as lectures will be posted via the internet and students MUST have access to the internet on a regular basis outside of class.
The differences between Honors Physical Science and the usual Physical Science course are evident in the level of understanding of the content knowledge as well as the degree and difficulty of laboratory work. The purpose of the laboratory work will be to provide students with enjoyable hands-on learning that promotes scientific inquiry. Labs Skills students should acquire during this course include: making observations, recording data, calculating and interpreting results based on the quantitative data obtained, and communicating effectively the results of experimental work. The problem-solving strategies obtained during this course will prepare students for advanced placement level courses later in high school.
Grading will be as follows:
20% - Basic Understanding Notebook Entries
30% - Basic Understanding Assessments
40% - Applying and Creating (Labs and projects)
10%- In-Class Activities and Assignments
I have many fun and valuable learning experiences planned this trimester and throughout the year. Because of the budget cuts this year, and to ensure that students have the opportunity for quality laboratory experiences in Honors Physical Science, I am asking for a $6.00 donation and/or a donation of any of the supplies listed below.
Also, please check through the required classroom supply list below and make sure your student will have the supplies he/she needs to be successful this trimester.
CLASSROOM SUPPLIES (REQUIRED DAILY)
v 1 Composition Notebook (Loose leaf or spiral notebook not acceptable for laboratory use)
v Pen/pencil
v Colored pencils
v Highlighters
v Glue sticks (2 per trimester)
v Ipads, ipod touchs, tablets, or smart phones are encouraged (Ipads will be provided for in the classroom for students who do not have their own)
LABORATORY SUPPLY DONATIONS NEEDED
Your help in these matters is appreciated, and will greatly enhance your student’s learning experiences this year.
Thank You!
